But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  James 1:6

In Matthew chapter 8, we see Jesus cleanse a leper, heal a paralyzed servant, heal Peter’s mother-in-law, He “casts demons out of many”, “healed all who were sick”, needless to say, by the end of the day he was pretty exhausted. So, He and the disciples get into a boat to cross over to the other side. It appears that He quickly falls asleep because a storm blows up and the disciples have to wake Him because they fear that they will perish in the storm. “And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Similarly in Matthew 14, we see Jesus send the disciples to cross over to the other side again, while He stays behind and disperses the crowd and to go up on the mountainside to pray. Again, the boat is being struck by waves, but there is no storm. Just before dawn Jesus walked out on the water, the disciples cry out in fear when they see Him, thinking He is a “ghost”. Once Jesus identifies Himself, precious, silly Peter (whom, of all the disciples, I most closely identify with; ) says “Lord, if its you, tell me to come to you on the water”. Jesus tells him to “come” and Peter begins to walk on top of the water with Jesus, but he sees how strongly the wind is blowing, takes his eyes off of Jesus and begins to fear and sink. in verse 31 Jesus immediately reaches out, catches him and says “O you of little faith,” “why did you doubt?”

How many times over the course of our lives, do we pray to God and we pray with the mindset that “God isn’t going to answer this prayer” or “this is to big for me to pray for” or “God can’t use me for that”, and Jesus says “O, You of Little Faith.”

In John 15:5 Jesus says that apart from Him we can do nothing and then in Matthew 17 He tells us that if we have faith as small as a mustard seed we can move a mountain. As you read this, I truly believe that, your flesh ( like mine does) says “that is ridiculous, no one can move a mountain”. And Jesus, again, says “O, You of Little Faith”.

We have a Heavenly Father who devised a plan that would allow us to be forgiven for every sin that we will ever commit, He raised His Son from the dead and seated Him at His right hand, our Savior healed the sick , lame and deaf, He cast out demons and raised the dead to life, He taught His disciples how to heal, cast out demons and raise from the dead and He has said that, in His name, we will do even greater things than He has done ( Truly, Truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. John 14:12). What will it take for us to stop doubting?! What other miracles must He perform?!

I pray that today we would fully comprehend the greatness to which God has called us. Not greatness in terms of the world’s greatness, but greatness in terms of having the ability to do ANYTHING, in Jesus name, that God wills for us to do. I pray that our walk is getting closer to the Lord and that we are in His word more, and that we are heeding the leading of the Holy Spirit. Then those things that we desire, that are not of the flesh, will be God’s will and we CAN do it (whatever it is that He is calling us to). I pray that we would pray, like the unbelieving father in Mark 9 who witnesses Jesus casting a demon out of his son, “I believe; help my unbelief”. I pray that we would embrace what God has for us and realize that He wants to use us and has already equipped us for that work (The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. Isaiah 61:1)
