When God laid creating this website on my heart, I fought Him a little bit. I said, “Who, me?” Like Moses, I made excuses for why I was not the person for the job. I said, “God, I’m a high school drop out and I don’t have the intellect to write well enough” (just in case He was unaware that I dropped out of school 🙂 ). And I reminded Him that I was not tech-savvy and had no idea how to begin (just in case He had forgotten 🙂 ). I let Him know that the cost was of concern to me (just in case He didn’t already know that 🙂 ).
At the end of the day, however, God knew all those things. But He wasn’t asking me to analyze the situation. He was asking me to trust Him, move in His strength and power, and say, “Yes, I will.” “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58.
Unfortunately, the enemy knows our weaknesses.
The enemy knows when we lack confidence. He whispers, “You can’t do that”, “You aren’t equipped for that”, and “You aren’t smart enough for that”. And we believe him! We ask God, “Who, me?” And we doubt that He can use us.
But it is that very weakness that glorifies God even more. “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9.
If we have come to know the Lord a little later in our lives, we may have some sins that the enemy still uses against us. He whispers, “Remember when you did this?” And he reminds us of old sin. Or he whispers, “How could someone who did that be used by God?” And before you know it, we ask God, “Who, me?” We doubt that He can use us.
But, once we are forgiven, God doesn’t hold our sin against us. He does not remember it, nor should we. And the testimony of what God rescued us from can bring Him even more glory. “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” Isaiah 43:25
Sometimes the enemy uses good things in our lives such as our families. He whispers, “You don’t have time for that” or “They need you more than God does”. And we end up lying to ourselves and believing the enemy. We tell ourselves, “Yeah, God would want me to focus more on my family than other people.” So, when God says, “I want to use you”, we say, “Who, me?” Then we tell Him, “No, I’m busy with this family you gave me.”
But, God has promised to provide for our needs and that includes those of our family. It is far more crucial that we teach our families to put God first. It is then that He will intercede and help meet their spiritual needs (which we cannot do). And He will bless our efforts. “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3.
Then, there are those things that we envy in other people’s lives. I assure you that the enemy knows what those things are. And he says, “You don’t want to do what He is asking. You want to sing in the choir, not teach little ones.” Or, “You want to evangelize, not be hospitable to people.” Maybe he whispers, “You want/deserve to be a leader, not a worker.” We then reject what God has for us and ask, “Who, me?”
God created each of us uniquely and with specific purposes. He knows how we will be most effective. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-6.
God — the God of all creation — has work for us to do. He wants us to do work that He will use to rescue other people from the bondage of their sin and eternal death.
No one is smart enough or skilled enough to free others from the bondage of their sin. We cannot free them from impending eternal death. But God, in us, is all the equipping and intellect we will ever need.
God will use us regardless of the amount of our sin. He will use us no matter how awful the sin is that we have committed. In fact, even our past sin (and the way in which He freed us from it) can be part of what God uses to draw others to Himself.
We do not have anything to do that is more important than that which God is asking of us. And, in fact, we care more for our family when we show them the importance of putting God first.
And there is nothing that will ever be more rewarding than doing the work that God has equipped us for.
So, when God moves on our heart to do something for Him, will we say, “Who, me?”. Because we are listening to the enemies whispers. Or, will we trust God and His word, power and strength and say, “Here I am Lord. Send me.”
Father God, we praise You that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:14.
We thank You, Father, that we are created for works that you planned beforehand for us to do. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10.
Forgive us when we listen to the enemy’s whispers and not to what You have said about us in your word. Forgive us for not desiring Your will and works more than all other things. Help us to hunger after You and after living out what You are calling us to Father. Help us to understand in a new and urgent way, how desperately those around us need You. And give us your heart for them. Use us mightily, Father.
