For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

As we approach Christmas, the birth of our Savior, (not the day that “Santa” comes) I thought it appropriate to look a little deeper into who this Babe in a Manger was that we celebrate.

If I asked you when we first meet Jesus in the scripture, you would probably say in the gospels when He is born in a manger (And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:7). If you think hard you might say in the womb when Mary goes to see Elizabeth and He is revealed to Elizabeth as the Savior in that moment (In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! Luke 1:39-42). Even in the womb, He was far more than just a babe. Elizabeth shows us that through the Holy Spirit’s revelation, she already knows that the baby in Mary’s womb is the Savior of the World.

The reality is that the first time that we meet Jesus is in the very first chapter of Genesis (Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it. Genesis 1:26), where we meet Jesus the Creator. Where God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit create man.

There are many names for Jesus, but I am going to show you just a condensed list. We have seen Him as the Baby in the Manger, the Creator and now, looking to the Scriptures we see Him as:

Lamb of God – “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace – “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. the government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Advocate – “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1

Bread of Life – “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35

“The Way the Truth and the Life – “Jesus answered, “I am thee way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Judge – “He is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.” Acts 10:42

Our Comforter – “For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.” 2 Corinthians 1:5 (KJV)

Risen Lord – “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

God promised, through His Holy Word, to provide for our needs. (And my God will supply ever need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19). In this brief list of the names of Christ, we see God’s hand of provision and how mightily He used our Savior (His Son) to do that.

We see that Jesus is the Lamb of God (perfect sacrifice for our sins), Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (our counselor/confidante, strong God, Loving and Eternal Father, our Peace, Advocate (the one who intercedes on our behalf and will say to the Father “these are those that you have given me Father and who are redeemed”), The Bread of Life (the one whom, if we accept Him and make Him Lord of our lives, will give us eternal life), The Way the Truth and the Life (the only way to the Father and Eternal Life), Judge (the one whom, if we reject Him will say “I knew you not”), our Comforter (the one to whom we can turn when there is no where else to turn), The Risen Lord (the one who has victory over the grave, the one who LIVES and through whom we can obtain eternal life).

He is so much more than a Baby in a Manger, He is everything that we need…His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 2 Peter 1:3.

He is a reason to celebrate Christmas.

I pray that today we would begin to truly understand all the needs that our Savior meets. I pray that we would open ourselves up to Him in a way that perhaps we never have before. Let’s allow ourselves to look at Him as The Gift that He is! He is the greatest gift we have ever been offered and if He is Lord of our Lives He is the greatest gift we will ever receive. Father God, oh how we praise and thank you for sending your Son, our Savior, to meet our needs, to die our death, to pay the penalty for our sin, to be our means of salvation and ever lasting life.
