Too Smart for Our Own Good

Too Smart for Our Own Good

There is no denying that we (mankind) has come a long way since Adam and Eve. My goodness, when God kicked them out of the Garden of Eden they couldn’t even clothe themselves. He had to make clothes for them. They were not rocket scientists. I am not saying that they were unintelligent, just inexperienced and they weren’t as cerebral as some are in this day and age. But, the flip side to that is, in this day and age we are too smart for our own good.

“For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Galatians 6:3.

We (mankind) have come so far that we have invented things that would have been considered witchcraft or wizardry 2000 years ago.

And, because of those advances we are very arrogant. We think that we can explain away God. “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.” Psalm 14:1.

We desire to (and think that we can) be God. It is what the enemy used to tempt Eve in the garden. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:5.

And in some instances we are our own gods. Because, we think that we are so smart, successful, wealthy that we don’t need God, because we are our own provider and our own god. God warns us about arrogant pride. “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23:12.

Mankind has come to a place where we think that we are so smart that we can defy and explain away that there even is a God. We see the danger in that in our nation today. If we defy God long enough, He will stop trying to protect us and allow us to have the sin we crave. “And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.” Romans 1:28. Then perhaps we will recognize that we are too smart for our own good.

God opposes the proud. “But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” James 4:6. But He gives grace to the humble.

God vowed to reveal Himself to everyone, that no one would have an excuse for not knowing Him. “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Romans 1:19-20.

But we think we are so smart. We are too smart for our own good and, we deceive ourselves. “Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness” 1 Corinthians 3:18-19. We do not want to give up our sin. And we do not want God to lead our lives. We want to sit on the throne of our lives….be careful what you wish for.

God doesn’t need rich people (it all belongs to Him anyway). He doesn’t need the successful (there is no success apart from God). And He doesn’t need the intelligent (His wisdom is all we need).

The apostle Paul addresses what God is looking for in a servant in 1 Corinthians 1:18-25. In fact he is telling them that he is not impressive or brilliant, he is just following God. “Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.”.

He chose us. Some of us suffer with brokenness. Some are poor. Others may be less intelligent. Yet God chose us and through us, He glorifies Himself!

There are extremely brilliant people who would argue vehemently that there is no God. Yet I am a mere 10th grade high school drop out who will tell you that my God LIVES! And with all that He has rescued me from, He is glorified. And because of that glorifiation others have come to know Him and have a personal relationship with Him.

Thank you God for choosing the foolish and lowly things of this earth (like me) to glorify yourself. Thank you for desiring an intimate relationship with us. Father, we pray for those with great wealth, success and intellect. Holy Spirit soften their hearts and remove the blinders from their eyes. Let them see you for the first time, in all your glory Lord. Draw them to yourself. Lord Jesus, we know that you desire that all would come to know you and we praise you for your love and sacrifice for us. Be so glorified in us that others cannot resist being drawn into a personal, intimate and loving relationship with you. Do not let us be too smart for our own good. We pray these things in your precious and holy name Jesus.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I pray that you would go to our Life Preserver page (https://forgiven-n-loved.com/life-preserver/) and pray the prayer outlined there. God desires that none would perish and wants to forgive you. He longs for a loving, intimate and personal relationship with you. Please pray and once you have reach out to me at admin@Forgiven-N-Loved.com and let me know. I’d love to pray for you and answer any questions you might have.
