The Floating Pulpit

Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. Luke 5:3.

I, and most people who LOVE to fish, would consider this a dream office. To work from a seat in a boat in the middle of the lake? Wow! But Jesus wasn’t looking for a dream office. He left His dream office to come to earth, for us, and to pay the penalty for our sin that we couldn’t pay. He was looking for a place to conduct business.

Jesus popularity had grown and he was now being pursued by a crowd of people who wanted to hear Him speak. He had no church, no temple, no podium, no lectern and no building…so He got into Peter’s boat and asked Peter to cast out a little ways and from there He taught the people about Himself and the things of God.

As usual, Jesus is the perfect example to us.

We are typically all about the details. If God leads us to write for Him, it may take 20 years before we start a blog ; ). If He calls us to teach, we may wait until someone in leadership asks. If God leads us to do a bible study, we will take months to determine the best location. Jesus had a crowd that was hungry for the word and He immediately picked the best spot He could find He fed them.

Our Savior wasn’t about pomp and circumstance. He didn’t need a church with stained glass windows. He didn’t try to find the most convenient location (He went where the Father sent Him). He didn’t wait for anyone but God to tell Him what to do and where to go. If the Father lead Him to do something, He did it, no delay.

To figure out why Jesus example here is of any importance, we need ask ourselves two questions, why did Jesus come? The answer is – to rescue sinners from eternal damnation. Why did He do what He did? The answer is – out of obedience to His Father. How does that represent an example for us you ask? Let’s ask ourselves similar questions. Why are we here? The answer is – to glorify God and be used by Him to rescue sinners from eternal damnation. Why should we do what Jesus did and resist delaying and act when God leads? The answer is – out of obedience to our Heavenly Father.

Jesus recognized that His days here on earth were limited and He had a lot to do. He didn’t sit around playing games on His phone, watching television or going to the casino. He was not only the sacrificial lamb who died in our place, He was a teacher and a servant. He could have just lived His life and then when God said it was time, gone to the cross. He used the limited time that He was here to glorify God, to help them understand their need for forgiveness and a savior.

We are here to point people to God as well. We are here to serve God as well. We are here to honor God with our lives too. Our days here on this earth are limited too. Let’s stop procrastinating. Let’s stop resisting. Let’s stop putting other things before God and His call in our lives.

One of my favorite commentators said…”Let us work with such tools as we have. While we are lingering and delaying, souls are perishing. It is the slothful heart that is always looking at the hedge of thorns (The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway. Proverbs 15:19) and the lion in the way (The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!” Proverbs 22:13) . Where we are and as we are, in season or out of season, by one means or another, by tongue or by pen, by speaking or by writing, let us strive to be ever working for God. But let us never stand still! That was so powerful for me.

If my Savior could make a floating pulpit out of a fishing boat, I can serve Him where ever He has me….without delay.

I pray that today, because of the example of our precious Savior, we would be anxious to serve God. I pray that we would hear His voice this morning, in our prayers, and know the direction that He’s leading. I pray that when He calls us out to do something that may be outside of our comfort zone, without delay we would say “yes Lord, I’ll do it.”

To quote J. C. Ryle again… “While we are lingering and delaying, souls are perishing”. Let’s make our own floating pulpits out of our desks, our cars, the line at the grocery store, wherever we are and allow God to use us to rescue those perishing souls.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, but like those people who hungered to hear Jesus have found yourself on our site to try and figure Him out. I pray that, right now, you would go to our Life Preserver page (https://forgiven-n-loved.com/life-preserver/) and pray the prayer that’s outline there. Jesus came to rescue us. He left Heaven and committed His earthly life to that goal, because He loves you. Please go to our life preserver page and pray that prayer and once you have reach out to me at admin@Forgiven-N-Loved.com and let me know. I’d love to be in prayer for you.

Luv Ya!

When God asked me to create this blog, I didn't even think it was something I could do. But in His strength and power and with His leading (and the help of our beautiful, contributing author, daughter) we did it! We pray that it helps you to draw closer to Him and that you would grow in your relationship and knowledge of our Saviour. Luv Ya!
