If you had asked me to describe who I was before I knew Jesus, I would have said several things. I would have said, “I am strong, independent, self-made, etc.” It wasn’t the truth, but it’s the answer I would have given. People are not always asking our name when they ask who we are. They may be asking our identity. They are asking us to describe who we are.
God replied “I am” when Moses asked who he should say was sending him. “God said to Moses, “ I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘ I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14.
But God addresses His identity in many verses.
He says in Revelation 1:8 that He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. God existed before the world. In fact, He created it. “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:16.
God created everything. He even created time. And through Him is the end… the end of pain, suffering, guilt, sin and even satan himself will come to an end. “All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever” Ezekiel 28:19.
But God will be for all of eternity. “To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:17. He always was, always is and always will be. “Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.” Psalm 90:2.
In Isaiah 41:10 we learn that He is our God. “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Because He is our God, we need not fear, because He is with us and will help us.
He is the Door. “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture” John 10:9. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we can be saved. We will find all that we need. Because Jesus is the entryway to the Father.
We might wonder why we would want to find pasture, as noted in our previous verse (John 10:9). We would desire pasture because pasture is sustenance. It is where the sheep finds all that He needs, including the Shepherd. And Jesus is our Good Shepherd. In John 10:11 He says “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”. He is our provider and protector.
He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. Jesus is the truth of the Gospel. And, He gives us eternal life in Heaven with Him when we accept Him as Lord of our lives (through the truth of the Gospel). Through Him, we gain access to the Father!
Furthermore, He is the Light of the World. “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12. Because God is patient and desires that none would perish, He gave us the Light of the World. Jesus is that light, shining freedom and redemption into the darkness of sin and guilt brought about by the enemy.
When we accept Christ as Lord of our lives, our identity changes. The old person that we once were is dead. Before, we were self reliant, proud, rebellious, and immersed in sin and guilt. “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” Romans 6:6.
But now, we can proclaim, “I am a new creation!” Once we repent and ask Jesus to be Lord of our lives, we will find freedom. We will find a new life. “We are a new creation. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
Because of Jesus, our lives and identity are made new. We are not the same because of Jesus. We can now say, “I am, a follower of Jesus Christ, a son/daughter of the King of Kings, the redeemed of the Lord.” And we become the light of the world. The Holy Spirit shines that light to others (through us). Then they will desire Jesus too. ““You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16.
God is the Great I Am! He is the one who redeems, provides, comforts, and loves. And, because He does, we live. Those who are followers of Jesus Christ will live for all of eternity (in Heaven), with Him. Thank you, Father!
We Praise you, Father, that you are the alpha and the omega. We thank you that you will never leave nor forsake us. Thank you, Father, that you love us and desire to spend eternity us. And thank you that you have provided a means by which that can be accomplished. Thank you for your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus, thank you for your love, sacrifice, and our redemption. Holy Spirit, we thank you for your leading. We thank you that (through you) our light can shine and that others see the light. Let it draw them to You. We thank you, Father. Help us to shine! We love you and praise you and pray this in your precious and Holy name, Jesus.
