How Was Creation Created?

How Was Creation Created?

If we wonder "How was creation created?" the scriptures tell us that it was created by the Trinity in love and with purpose.

I love God’s creation. Any of you who have read this blog for even a week already know that. I remember loving it from a very early age. It just drew me in, mesmerizing me. I found everything from lightning bugs and caterpillars to rainbows and the Arora Borealis absolutely fascinating. However, I couldn’t help but wonder, “How was creation created?”

Genesis 1:1 says that God created the Heavens and the Earth. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”. But there is an incredible debate between evolutionists and the Christian community and/or those who believe that God created creation.

Based on Genesis 1:1 we might say, “Well, you answered your own question. It was God.” But we should look a little deeper into the scriptures. And in no way am I saying that this verse is wrong. The word of God is Holy and inerrant (without error). God created the heavens and the earth, no question. But what else does scripture say with regard to our question, “How was creation created?”

To find the additional information needed to answer our question, we only have to look at Genesis 1:2. And I LOVE this verse. I love the imagery and the truth. It says, “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

If we are not careful, we will miss the truth of this verse. The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Who is the Spirit of God? It is the Holy Spirit! We see further proof that the Spirit of God is the Holy Spirit in Romans 8:9. “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” It is the Holy Spirit that indwells all believers.

So, we see that the Holy Spirit was right there with God the Father at the beginning of creation. In fact, Job 33:4 says that it was the Spirit of God that made him (us). “The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.” The Greek word, Pneuma, translates breath or Spirit. So the breath of God is the Spirit of God.

The Holy Spirit was not only there when God was creating creation, He was “hovering” over the waters. The Holy Spirit hovered over the waters the way the eagle hovered over her nest in Deuteronomy 32:11. “…like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft.”. The word “hover” translates the same in both verses. Think about that for a moment. The Holy Spirit hovered over the earth nurturing and caring for it the way that a mother eagle would her nest. And He did so with the same anticipation and longing for life that she would have… but far greater. What a beautiful picture!

So, again, we see both God and the Holy Spirit participating in creating creation.

But what about Jesus? Where was He?

John 1:1 confirms that Jesus was with God in the beginning. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Don’t miss that this is the name of Jesus. Revelation 19:13 confirms this. It says, “And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.” John 1:14 also confirms it. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

Jesus was right there. He was creating creation. “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:16.

The Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — were together creating creation. They were all there, bringing forth life.

And they are still right here, bringing forth life. They are no longer creating creation, but they are bringing forth life from similar darkness. From the darkness of sin, they now bring forth life into the lives of dying sinners. Hovering over the earth still, with the nurturing and caring nature that we see in the eagle in Deuteronomy 32:11… and LOVE.

The Trinity hovers and waits for life to spring forth in each of us; the life that will spring forth when we ask Jesus to be Lord of our lives. “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father” Galatians 4:4-6.

The life that they now bring is beautiful, glorious, eternal life. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” Romans 6:23.

So, we have found the answer to our question, “How was creation created?” It was created by the Trinity. It was designed with power, purpose, and love! “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God” Romans 1:20 (NLT). Creation declares the glory of God. Through it (and the wonders of it all), we see His hand. And, because of creation, we will have no excuse for not knowing Him. The entire purpose of it is to draw us to Him. It is proof that He is God!

Thank you, Father, for the splendor and magnificence of your creation. Thank you, Trinity, for your participation in creation. We are so grateful that creation declares your glory to us. And we thank you that you designed it to draw us to You. Thank you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for the love that you displayed in and through your creation. And thank you that you continue to pour it out on mankind. We praise you that you are still bringing forth life in the darkness (the darkness of sinful souls).

We pray that we (your creation) would also declare your glory and that others would see Your splendor and love. Let us glorify you in the same way that the mountains, rainbows, and cool breeze on a hot day display your splendor and love. Be glorified in us! We pray this in your precious and Holy name, Jesus.

We are the creation of the Trinity. Darkness fills the people around us who don’t know Jesus Christ. Let them see the splendor of His creation in you. Through you, the Trinity can bring forth life in the darkness of their lives. Our purpose is to declare the glory of God. So, go and glorify your Father in Heaven.
