Chasing After “Precious” Dreams and the Desires of Our Heart

My husband and I took a weekend away from our church and we attended the church where a precious brother in Christ pastors. The sermon was awesome. And, the worship team sang a song that was new to me, but also touched my heart.

The song they sang was called “Hallelujah Anyway” and, it was great. It spoke to me on many levels. It spoke about those times when it is difficult to praise God, but it proclaimed that I will “somehow say a Hallelujah Anyway”.

The chorus of the song said “even if my daylight never dawns, even if my breakthrough never comes, even if I’ll fight to bring You praise, even if my dreams fall to the ground, even if I’m lost, I know I’m found, even if my heart will somehow say Hallelujah anyway.”.

There was a particular verse of the chorus that got me thinking. It was the verse that said “even if my dreams fall to the ground” somehow I will say Hallelujah anyway.

I started thinking about the “precious” dreams that we have and chase after. We chase after dreams of fame, fortune, success, owning some possession, having a position of influence. These dreams can sometimes consume us. Not just in the sense of being the one thing that we chase after. But also in the sense that we lose everything else. Like a consuming fire, it leaves ruin and ashes.

I know, a lot of people will say “Oh, the scripture says that God wants to give us the desires of our heart”! And a lot of people will quote Psalm 37:4 – “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”.

It is true, God does desire to bless us. However, there is far more to it than just chasing after dreams and hearts desires with everything we have.

If you read Psalm 37, in context, you will see that it says “trust in the Lord” (verse 3). It says “delight yourself in the LORD” (verse 4). We are told “commit your way to the Lord”(verse 5). And, it says “be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.”(verse 7). BEFORE it says that He will give you the desires of your heart.

To trust in the Lord doesn’t mean, trust Him until He proves Himself untrustworthy. That is the way the world trusts in each other. It means trust Him with every fiber of our being, because He can’t lie! He will NEVER be untrustworthy. He never changes (Malachi 3:6), His decisions are never to harm us (Jeremiah 29:11 & Psalm 92:15), He never lies (Hebrews 6:18), and He is faithful to keep His promises (Psalm 89:34). God is trustworthy!

To delight in the Lord means to desire Him above all else. What do we delight in? Our children, our recreational activities, our careers, our status, are those the things that delight our hearts?

King Solomon had all of those things. He pursued them with all of his heart and life and at the end of his life he said, what a waste of a life (I’m paraphrasing here ; ). Referring to himself as Teacher, he said ““Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” Ecclesiastes 1:2. Matthew 6:21 says Where your treasure is there your heart will be also. When we delight in the Lord, we will be abundantly blessed with treasures that neither rust nor fade (Matthew 6:19-20).

When we commit our way to the Lord, we set aside our wants and desires and follow His lead and His desires/will for our lives. We allow Him to become the Lord of our lives. 2 Corinthians 5:15 says “
and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.”. Because of what He did on the cross to rescue us from our sin and eternal damnation, we are free and safe to allow Him to be Lord of our lives and to commit our way to Him.

God asks us to be still and patient for Him. That means trusting, delighting and committing in Him enough to say Lord, your timing is perfect and I will wait on you to bring about this thing. Knowing that if it doesn’t come about, it either wasn’t good for us, and/or He has something greater planned.

Please know that being patient for God doesn’t mean sitting down and saying “Okey God, I just sit here . and do nothing until you bring this thing about”. It maybe that the reason you don’t have it or it hasn’t come about is because you aren’t finished growing and preparing for whatever that thing is. Get busy in your patience!!

When we “trust in the Lord”, “delight ourselves in the Lord”, “commit our way to the Lord”, and are “still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.”, we should then desire God above all other things. We should desire His will above all other things. When we do, God will give us the desires of our heart. Maybe that is the fulfillment of a dream. Maybe not. I don’t know what that will look like for you. I do know that the scripture says that “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,”.

God can, will and desires to do far more than we think, dream, desire or imagine. Are we going to chase after the tiny little dreams and desires of our heart? Are we going to be so consumed by it that our lives will be left in ashes and ruin? Or, are we going to chase after the one who loves us so much that He has dreams and desires for us that are far greater than we can even imagine?

Father God forgive us for chasing after miniscule dreams and desires and not after you. Forgive us for putting our will and wants before yours. Help us to trust and delight ourselves in you. Help us to commit our way and be still and patiently wait for you. Father we know that your ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Father, We know that your desire is for us to desire you with our whole heart. (Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ Matthew 22:37 & You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13). Help us to desire you above all else Father, then, give us the desire of our hearts….You. We pray this in Jesus precious and Holy name. Amen
