“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8
Our little, 3 year old, grandson is having surgery today. It is very routine surgery one that typically has no residual effects, but for those of us who adore him, there is anxiety.
In situations like this it is so incredibly important to know what the scripture says, to know God’s desires and to know what to do.
When it comes to what the scripture says, in those times when we are unsettled, have fear or anxiety, it says the following: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7. “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3 “But now, this is what the Lord says…Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4.
What God desires is that we would not have fear or anxiety and we just saw in 2 Timothy 1:7 that He didn’t even give us a spirit that should entertain those feelings. He says in Isaiah 43:1 that because He knows us so intimately and has done so much for us, He desires that we would have no fear. We see (in Isaiah 26:3) that He desires that we would stay our minds on (keep thinking about and praying to) Him, because we trust Him for the out come of our situation. He also calls us to be strong and courageous and not fearful or dismayed, because He is right here with us during those times (Joshua 1:9). And in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 He promises to comfort us to enable us to then comfort others in their trials.
God’s desire was not for my 3 year old grandson to require surgery. He didn’t create our little man imperfectly so that man would have to fix the error. The enemy is the King of this world and revels in the fact that, as a result of our sin and all that we have done to this precious earth that God gave us dominion over and that we have neglected and ruined, sickness and maladies occur in the human body. But, God in His great mercy, is our comforter (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), our peace and our strength ( The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace Psalm 29:11). His desire is to fulfill the wondrous plans that He has for us (Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done, and the plans You have for us–none can compare to You–if I would proclaim and declare of them, they are more than could be numbered. Psalm 40:5).
But, something is required on our part….TRUST.
When David was in fear of being killed, he prayed “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3”.
God is Omnipotence (all-powerful), Omniscience (all-knowing) and Omnipresence (all-present – He is everywhere, past, present, future, my living room, the streets of the Philippines and the basement of believers in the middle east worshiping Him).
He can do anything (heal our loved ones), He knows everything (even our fears), He is everywhere (in the waiting room with us, in the operating room holding our little mans hand and guiding the hands of his surgeons). THANK YOU FATHER!
He loves our little guy more than we do. He created him with the most incredible heart of love and joy that I have ever seen and I TRUST that He is going to use that little man to minister to many and draw many people to Himself.
When I told my son that we had to trust God with our little man, he said “I know, it is just the hand off that is difficult.”. How well I know. And how well God knows. After all, He handed our little man off to a family of broken sinners to raise him almost 3 years ago. And although none of us are doing it perfectly (it takes a whole family you know ; ) God knew the love that we would have for him and we praise you every day Father for sharing him with us. What a blessing He is.
Our Heavenly Father also knows the heartache of the hand off because He had to hand off his one and only Son, to be mocked, brutalized, crucified and to die for our sins. And, He knew, before hand, what His Son was going to endure.
But, thank you Father that you raised Him from the dead and He now sits at your right hand, awaiting those of us who love you, to spend eternity with Him.
There is that old poem about footprints in the sand and it is about a dream, that the writer has, in which he is walking on the beach with the Lord and the writer notices that during the most difficult times in their life there is only one set of foot prints. The writer inquires of the Lord, why He left when he needed Him most and The Lord replied, “My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of suffering, when you could see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”
Father God, we TRUST you with our little guy, we trust you with His surgery, we trust you with His future and we trust you with His eternity. But carry us, Lord.
I pray that when we enter moments when we would have anxiety and an unsettled spirit, that we would do what we are called to do in the scripture – trust God and not our minds and our flesh (5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5 & 6). We must also give thanks, not for the trial, but for the promises that God is going to keep and the way He will see us through the difficulty and pray without ceasing (16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
I pray that during these storms we would remember that we serve the God who calms the wind and waves with just the sound of His voice… He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. Matthew 8:26.
God loves us more than we love others and far more than we can imagine. He desires good things for us and when they don’t come, because of a sinful fallen world, he desires to be there for us, comfort us, hear our prayers and calm the wind and waves in our storms. Have Faith!
