Boy Do I Have Them Fooled.
For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. Romans 6:18
Have you ever found yourself in a position in which you felt that you had to pretend to be in a better place than you actually were or a better person than you are? Maybe it was at a high school reunion, maybe it was at an interview for a new career opportunity, maybe it was for a love interest or their parents. Or maybe we even pretend to be walking more closely with the Lord than we really are.
The reason is irrelevant, the bottom line is that there are several problems with attempting to deceive people (for any reason). First you will always have to remember what you lied about and you’ll never be able to be truthful about the situation.
Another problem is that God feels very strongly about deception. “you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, LORD, detest.” Psalm 5:6
But the biggest problem with Being deceptive is that we have lost sight of who it is we need to please. “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10. We’ve lost sight of the fact that The God of all creation loves us just the way we are. “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8. And, we fail to recognize that although we may be thinking “boy do I have them fooled” (and we may have), but, we don’t have Him fooled. – “For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.” Luke 8:17
Lies and deceit are sin. The premise that there are “little white lies”, “gray areas” or that deceit isn’t a lie, is in fact a lie, right from the enemies mouth.
Judas kiss, which was a sign used to identify Jesus to those who intended to crucify Him, was rooted in deceit. Does that not speak for itself?
I pray that today we would desire to be truthful. That we would strive to be forthright and someone that people can trust to be honest. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15. Let’s make pleasing, honoring and glorifying Him paramount in our lives.
