Beauty Queen or Princess

Beauty Queen or Princess

(“Beauty Queen or Princess” is an edited re-post of a 6/7/19 post)

I remember watching the Miss America Pageant with my family as a little girl. We would watch these young women perform some sort of feat in the Talent Competition. Then, we would listen and watch as they answered a world events question. Next, they would walk around and pose in their bathing suits. And finally, they would enter dressed in the most gorgeous ball gowns I had ever seen. Their hair, makeup, and jewelry was so exquisite that you couldn’t take your eyes off of them. These women looked like princesses with hopes of being the next beauty queen. I would think, “Oh, how exciting it must be to take part in the Miss America Pageant!” Every little girl wanted to be a beauty queen or a princess… including me.

But, as I grew older, my freckles came out. Then acne appeared. I was bigger than average and not a tiny size 4. My hair was pin-straight and not a pretty color. I was really quite average at best… certainly no princess or beauty pageant contestant.

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30

Becoming a grown woman didn’t change much about my appearance. But, as an adult, I could camouflage my average looks with makeup. And jewelry and long hair are great distractions, too. But I was still the same freckle-faced little girl in my heart. Even as an adult, I didn’t see myself as a princess or beauty queen contestant.

My precious and incredible husband tells me all the time how beautiful I am. He asks what he can do to help me to see what he sees. The honest truth is that, when I look at myself, I don’t feel “beautiful” (the way the world describes beauty). And, like me, you probably don’t see what the world would call beautiful when you look in the mirror either.

Furthermore, I bet that if you asked those pageant contestants about their appearance, they would tell you about their personal imperfections. Just like us, they would not feel like princess or beauty queen material either.

These thoughts and ideas are lies from the enemy. God created us in His own image. We are His workmanship. And God created us with a purpose. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10.

How sad is it that we rely on the world to tell us what beauty is? And especially when the one who created us says this about us, “you are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you” (Solomon 4:7); “Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed” (Psalm 34:5); “Your workmanship is marvelous – how well I know it” (Psalm 139:13); “For we are God’s masterpiece” (Ephesians 2:10).

We are God’s masterpiece. The creator of sunrise and sunset, rainbows and flowers, mountain ranges, and baby smiles calls us His masterpiece.

And He tells us that He will “be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:18). We are daughters of the creator of every good and perfect gift. We are princesses and daughters of the King of Kings.

As Christ’s followers, God’s word is in our hearts. The Holy Spirit indwells us. And, through the Holy Spirit, we can have a humble spirit. These are the characteristics of a daughter of God. They are also what make us gorgeous in our Father’s eyes. And these things are what He will use to glorify and draw others to Himself. What could be more beautiful than God’s instrument to rescue others who are lost and hurting?

I pray that you would recognize and fully understand how incredibly loved and beautiful you are in your Heavenly Father’s eyes. And I pray that you understand that the sound of your voice (in prayer to Him) is a precious and beautiful sound that He longs for.

Embrace your Princess status as a follower of Jesus Christ and put aside the Beauty Queen insecurities. A Beauty Queen is merely an image. A princess is a loved and treasured daughter of the King.
