As I have mentioned in the past, I love God’s creation. I could simply sit in our yard and listen to the crickets and birds for hours, watching them flit back and forth. We recently had a bird called a Indigo Blue Bunting in our yard. He is not common in our area, so he was quite a blessing to me. In doing a little research about the Blue Bunting I found that they are really quite intelligent. They are so intelligent in fact, that they migrate at night, utilizing the stars for direction. They even have a type of internal clock, that allows them to adjust their orientation to a star, even as it moves through the night sky. But I, on the other hand, get lost in a hotel. So, it makes me question, are men or birds smarter?

“Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars and spreads his wings toward the south?” Job 39:26.

As man drifts further and further from God, the times get more and more volatile. Not just because of racial issues, but political agression is worse than ever, and hate crimes are on the rise as well. Yet if you did a web search regarding man’s intellect (which I did), the bulk of the results would indicate that mankind is getting smarter.

But do we really see that in the Bible or in the world around us?

Certainly we see progressions in technology, medicine and other areas. Yet, we reject God and the teachings of the Bible more and more.

There are quite a number of verses in the scripture that discuss intellect. Following are a few examples:

We think that it is our hard work that provides our intellect. But God is actually the source of wisdom and intelligence. “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” Proverbs 2:6

Some of us think that we know everything, but in reality we know very little. “Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much” 1 Corinthians 8:2 (NLT).

Mankind thinks that we are intelligent, but God looks at our acts and sees foolishness. “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”

The arrogance of the “wise” in thinking we are intelligent and there is no God, will one day be put to shame. “The wise men are put to shame, They are dismayed and caught; Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, And what kind of wisdom do they have?” Isaiah 47:10.

So, I will admit that the scriptures do say that as we get closer to Jesus return, mankind will increase in knowledge. It doesn’t say we will be smarter than birds or the rest of God’s creation though. “But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase Daniel 12:4.

The reason that the scriptures don’t say that mankind is more intelligent than all of God’s creation is that we (mankind) miss the truth. We (according to the scriptures, which are without error) are the only creation of God that isn’t smart enough to recognize that He is our creator and every gift is from Him. So….are men or birds smarter? “But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:7-10.

So, I guess we have an answer to our question “Are Men or Birds Smarter?”. The fact that God’s entire creation recognizes Him in all His glory as Creator, with the exception of mankind, proves that Birds are smarter.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7.

Father God, we praise you for your creation. We praise you that it declares your glory. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Psalm 19:1. We ask you to forgive us for our arrogance. That same arrogance that causes us to believe that we exist apart from you. Your love for such arrogant creatures and the lengths at which you have gone to redeem us is unfathomable Lord. We praise and thank you for your love for us. Holy Spirit, soften the hearts of those who reject your existence. Please ignite a passion in those of us who love you, to share you with those who don’t. Be glorified! We love you and pray this in your precious and Holy name Jesus. Amen.
