My husband and I have 11 grandbabies and we cannot spend enough time with them. Those that are in their teens aren’t as keen on spending time with us, but we still enjoy time with them. The little ones however, tend to get pretty excited when we get to spend time together And I think we are even more excited. We love to see their little faces light up, And to hear their little voices call out to Grammy and Grampy. But there’s nothing more precious than holding them in our arms, snuggling on the sofa with them or maybe even just holding their tiny hand and taking a walk. We are very fortunate that most of us live so close, to one another and that we frequently spend time together.

Unfortunately, we have one little one that lives about 1000 miles away. Because we are not yet retired, we don’t get to see her as often as we would like. We do try to FaceTime with her, but it’s nowhere near the same, we long to be able to spend time together.

Knowing the heartache that we feel, not being able to see her, spend time with her, kiss her little cheeks or hold her hand, causes me to wonder about the depth of longing God must have for us.

When we look at the scripture, and start in Genesis, we see that God’s design was that He would walk and talk with man and have fellowship with him and that they would spend time together (Genesis 3:8 “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.”).

But because of sin, we became separated from God. We can see throughout the Old Testament that God still desired communion with us, though.

We can see this with Moses (Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent. Exodus 33:11). Scripture says that God not only spoke to Moses face to face, but He spoke to him as a friend.

We can also see it with Noah (“Then the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.” Genesis 7:1). God spared Noah and his family from the flood because of Noah’s righteousness and obedience and God spoke with him.

In the New Testament we see God speaking audibly to people, through His Son – Jesus Christ. (For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. John 6:40).

God still desires fellowship with us. Not just through prayer and His word, but also through the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit. Once we accept Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit resides inside us and we have communion with Him daily, if we are living our lives for God.

Our Heavenly Father loves us, with a love far greater than we have ever experienced (We love him, because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19).

The way our teenage grandchildren get distracted and busy and distant from us, we do the same thing to God. We allow busyness, family and even sin, come between God and us. With all that God has done, to ensure that we could have a relationship and communion with Him (for eternity) how do we allow anything to come between us?

I pray that today we would make A commitment to spend time Together with God and in His word, daily. I pray that, the way our grandchildren run to hug us when we see them, you and I would run to our Heavenly Father in prayer. Let’s take our Dad’s hand, Express our love to Him and glorify and praise Him to others.
